We write that our magazine publishes “excellent writing in any style that expresses human truth.” No issue to date may live up to that standard as well as this one.

Here we have stunning prose poems (“Republic of Collateral Damage” by A. P. Sullivan and “The Woman Who Sells Cosmetics” by Dan Harder) and two “eye poems” (“Canadian Geese in Autumn” by Rosemarie Crisafi and “Out of Place” by Dan Harder). Breaking with our custom of publishing primarily imaginative works, we bring you a nonfiction article about monumental sand sculptures. In “Castles on the Sands of Time,” H. Balakrishnan introduces the reader to the extraordinary sand sculptor, Sudarsan Padnaik. Fabrizio Bianchini's memoir, "Steel Drum," is his first published story. Other poets appearing in our pages for the first time with fine work are Elizabeth Dolan, Michael Estabrook, Jason Fraley, Do Gentry, Carlos Hiraldo, J. Patrick Lewis, Robin Palmer, and Mark Thalman. Robin Palmer’s contribution, “Undress,” is her first published poem.

Several writers also return to our pages. Kenneth Pobo, featured in our inaugural issue (see January 2001), has been called a “nature poet.” Here he gives us one outdoor and one indoor poem, “Stained” and “News at 11:00 and at 1:00.” In Lyn Lifshin’s series of poems about love and loss, she transmutes a detail about running to the subway into a meditation on death, another descent underground, and the relationship between the living and the dead. Susan Rawlins provides an unusual and moving memorial in “Driven to Destruction” and acute commentary on the ballet, “Giselle,” in “Matinée.”

We regularly receive compliments about the photographs in this publication. In this issue, we are particularly pleased to publish photographs of Sudarsan Padnaik’s sand sculptures, which appear with "Castles on the Sands of Time" and the "News About Facets Writers" page.

Finally, we are always delighted to hear about the success of the writers we publish. Two people we published early on, Daniel Olivas and Kelley White, have books coming out in October, Devil Talk and A Gilford Offering. You will find links to order these books on “News About Facets Writers."

Visit this site again for updates about the upcoming issue, scheduled to appear some time in November, and please share the link with your friends.
