Writing
Advice
Mystery and science fiction writer Miriam Allen deFord
(1888-1975), said that when she was young, she wanted to be
Keats. Her first major publication was a sociology textbook
she wrote with her husband, Maynard Shipley, far in form
from Romantic poetry. She went on to write mysteries,
science fiction, and histories. She eventually published a
single book of poetry. She said if she had any advice to a
young writer, it was to aim high because if her aspiration
had been low, she might not have achieved all that she did.
She also said the best way to learn how to write was to
write and to write every day.
