With this issue, Facets embarks on its second year of publication. We remain committed to excellent writing in any style that expresses human truth and believe that our intentions are reflected in the diversity of stories and poems assembled here.

In our last issue, we started News About Facets Writers, and in these pages we begin In Our Mailbox. We welcome your comments about particular pieces we've published as well as the future of literature in the electronic age. The volume of submissions over the past year has increased steeply, which is encouraging. However, as of this issue, we will accept online submissions only (see Submission Guidelines for details).

The terrorist attacks of 2001 dealt a staggering blow to people's confidence in the future. As we recover little by little from that blow, we continue to believe that literature has a role in making the world more humane. In his poem, " a litany for an age of ruined faith," John Sweet honors the graces of the everyday while cautioning that redemption may not be "that simple." In "The World of Murdered Children," Kelley White talks about the poet as witness to terror who gives voice to those who may not be able to speak for themselves.

Please visit this site again for previews of Volume II, Issue No. 2, due to come out May 15, 2002. Thank you very much!
