Welcome to the
inaugural issue of the online literary magazine,
Facets! Our premier issue features the
short fiction and poetry of sixteen superb and
distinctive writers.
Briefly, about our
title: Facets alludes to the process of
making art as compared to the formation of a
jewel. To create a jewel, the earth is mined for
raw stones, which are then washed, cut, and polished
until the previously hidden, inherent brilliance of
the stone itself shines through. Likewise, in a
story, poem, or memoir, we mine the earth of our
experience, then clean, shape, and polish it.
This is what we can find in literature perhaps
more than anywhere else: an ability to perceive
ourselves, to plumb interior depths, and to appreciate
myriad colorations in the facets of our human
experience.
We believe that
literature has the power to connect people,
transcending superficial differences. Because
literature gives voice to the powers of light and
darkness within, it also has the power to heal, even
to save us from what might otherwise overcome us.
We are determined that
this inaugural issue is the beginning of a forum for
writers' voices to be heard in the year 2001 and
beyond. Facetswill be published
quarterly, with our second issue scheduled to appear
April 23, 2001. Please visit our site again for
previews of selected work from the upcoming
issue.
